So, um, yeah.

I think I'm, like, the one person on lj that doesn't think that Curves is the spawn of Satan and must therefore die (or be vanquished or something).

I want to write up a rant about this, but I think my thoughts are too unfocused right now to say anything really coherent, let alone meta about the whole thing. My luck it would just turn into a wank and where would we all be then? :-P

In any case, I'm staying with Curves because so far it's working and I'm happy with the one I go to. (Evilness of the founder aside.)

And onto the update (for those of you who may actually be interested):

I lost a total of 3 inches in various places since last time (March 17th), so yay there. But have somehow managed to gain 8 pounds. WTF?!?!?!?

I know I haven't been eating quite as well as I should and have missed a lot of time because of Spring Break and going to Connexions, but I haven't been doing *that* badly. My eating and lack of going can only explain maybe 2 or 3 pounds (at most) as far as I can figure. And the thing is, I don't feel like I put on weight.

The only explanation I can even remotely think of is that my body suddenly registered the muscle weight that I've been building over the past few months, but that doesn't seem to totally fit either.

This is mucho weird.

(And, no, my period, which may start next week, can't be factored into this. I never retained water prior to my period and if I did, it was never enough to make any difference.)

The last time I went in, I had gained weight but lost inches. It has to be conversion to muscle mass.

I ended up canceling my membership to Curves. I liked the staff & members, but the information revealed in the article tainted the experience. However, it was my decision & I in no way think that everyone has to make the same one.

I know that most of the people were sincere in passing what they considered important information, but I do have issues with how some people used the information - in certain instances, it was like a justification for existing enmity. I would love to read your rant sometime to see how you feel about the situation. In the end, I just couldn't reconcile my beliefs with the founder's use of my money.

Don't sweat it. Muscle weighs more than fat and the fact that you're losing inches says that your body is reshaping itself. While I understand the desire to lose excess weight, it might be healthier to go into it with the mindset of I want to be a healthier person -- I am doing my body good to move and breathe and to eat better.

And then don't tie it all to a goal of losing x-pounds. If you feel good, feel better then it's all good and the weight will come.

re: Curves - personal decision I've made for myself. I've had a long standing policy of not supporting organizations that contribute to things I'm opposed to. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find this information, so I find a need to spread it. I don't shop at LL Bean or eat Domino's pizza because of rumors to this effect that I heard years ago.

That being said, I don't think that most people who work for these organizations know where some of their profits may be directed. I think that they are focused on providing you with a great exercise experience. I can't fault anyone for not wanting to severe ties with establishments they have good relationships with -- if this is even an issue for you, which I know might be something we come down on opposite side of the fence on, which is also fine.

That being said, I know that I buy from corporations every day that have moral/environmental practices that I am opposed to and that if I was suddenly gifted with all the knowledge to identify them and to identify alternate source, I couldn't switch over in an instant. But I try :-)

Everyone always says that muscle weighs more than fat. This is both true and not true. A pound of muscle is gonna weigh the same as a pound of fat: one pound. *But* muscle is denser than fat so that a six inch cube of muscle will weigh more than a six inch cube of fat. Why, yes, I am pedantic! *grin*

I'm guessing that your apparent gain is a combination of muscle addition and water retention. Weight can easily fluctuate five pounds in a day. If you ate something salty for supper the night before you weighed that could make a difference, too.

So now I'm going to hit google and see what kind of rumours everyone is talking about.

((hugs))

Adding to this, I think they say muscles retain water, especially when you're working new ones. Try drinking more water. I can really tell the difference myself when I don't.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] justhuman. You know the exercise is good for you and if it makes you feel healthier/better, then don't sweat the rest. Glad to hear you're doing so well and staying committed. Go you!
