Since Shore Leave is about a week and a half away, tonight I watched David Hewlett's movie, Treed Murray (aka Get Down in the US.) It was a really good movie and I highly recommend it.

And with Shore Leave drawing near, I've been thinking of the last time I went to it - which was a number of years ago when I was still fairly new to the whole fandom thing, let alone the con thing. Shore Leave was actually the second con I went to alone.

(My first ever con was this little thing up in King of Prussia, PA, at the Scanticon hotel - some of you know where I'm talking about - that my dad took me to. My first con by myself was to CreepCon in Baltimore.)

It's funny because I remember at that Shore Leave I knew [livejournal.com profile] nakedwesley and maybe one other person and I had never been to something so big. I remember walking into the lobby and seeing two Klingon Storm Troopers and thinking "Ooooh-kaaaay" and later that weekend being really amused by the guy selling a Shakespearean play that had been translated into Klingon. This was also the first time I had heard of zines and randomly fell into the Kiefer/Lou fandom through some of the zines Agent With Style was selling. And the whole thing was just *wow*.

This time, it's still wow, but I'm like, "Okay, I need to remember to bring the Coke rewards for Mysti and the Pepsi rewards for [livejournal.com profile] kimberlyfdr." And squeeing over getting to see [livejournal.com profile] nakedwesley, D, [livejournal.com profile] mashfanficchick, [livejournal.com profile] mirnell, and [livejournal.com profile] kimberlyfdr.

Oh, random thought, [livejournal.com profile] nakedwesley - what do you think about me bringing stuff to make 808s?

Yeah, I loved Treed Murray. (Though, I think that the American title - Get Down - doesn't have quite the same magic and has a totally different tone and connotation to the movie, and even different point of view.) My mom, on the other hand, was like, "Well, that was different." And my first thought was, "Maybe it's because it's a Canadian movie." But I doubt that's it. Knowing my mom, it's her. :-P

And, yes, it makes sense (to me, at least), that Murray was similar to Rodney, yet not. And I agree that it played to David's strengths.
