sam_gamgeeDisclaimer-type thing: I love Joss & co. I love the shows they've given us. I really don't have anything against them.
That having been said...
*headdesk*
I'm working on a Xander/Graham fic that's from Graham's pov, so I decided to look some stuff up about the special operations part of the military. (And can I just say how happy I am that a) my bookstore is a Barnes & Noble college affiliate and that b) we have some books on the special ops in trade books?)
So I found out that yes, there can be Marines in Lowell House (Riley says to Faith!Buffy in "Who Are You?" "So my fantasies don't tend to include a bunch of marines staring in at me." when she starts making out with him) and Riley and Graham can still be in the Army (Major Ellis tells Riley in "Into the Woods" "We're not government. We're Army." and Graham adds, "Just like you."). It's not uncommon for the different branches of Special Ops to work together on a mission.
Here's the *headdesk* part - Sam Finn, Riley's wife. The Special Forces only allow men. So that counts her out to begin with. The Special Forces are also *very* selective. Only 5% are even eligible to begin with, and even less get through the rigorous training that's needed.
So, if that's the case, then how the hell did she get into it with this story - "I went down to Central America with the Peace Corps. One night, my entire infirmary got slaughtered by... (shakes her head) I didn't know what they were. I got saved, quit the Corps, joined the squad. My first firefight, I met Riley. (smiling) We started talking, you know, first about tactics, missions, stuff like that. And then about you."
I get the fact that she was a plot point/device/whatever. But, seriously. If I can find this stuff out in about 5 minutes....
Feel free to point out the holes in this.
