- I saw a car with a bumper sticker that said, "If you save a baby from abortion and he turns out to be GAY, will you still defend his rights?"

- Almond M&Ms are sweeter than I expected, but still good.

- My dad seems to be amazed that 12 minutes is too long to steam broccoli and squash. (The broccoli's still edible, just rather soft. The squash, in my opinion, is too mushy.)

- For some reason, I'm deeply affected by the death of Eight Belles. I don't know why, since I don't follow horse racing and haven't ridden since before I started college. But every time I hear about the horse or see a picture, my first response is "No! Divert attention! Divert attention!" Go figure.

- While LOLCats are amusing, I'm enjoying LOLDogs more.

I'm at the library (again). Considering the fact that I work at a place where we ship things next day and such, you'd think I'd realize that someone being told at 6:30 pm that something's going to be overnighted to them, that it really won't be there the next day. (Yes, that was me believing that.) So, hopefully things will be back on track tonight. (*crosses fingers again*)

And I remembered yesterday's #5 - the Newark Library doesn't seem to like LJ - it's very slow loading its pages (whereas it's fine with everything else). The UD library, on the other hand, seems to have no problems with it.

6. (Because I feel like continuing this numbering thing.) There was a letter to the editor in today's newspaper that, while I agree this person is entitled to their opinion, in my opinion falls into the category of "Ummm....Right."

Democrats look like other evil regimes in history
Listed below is the structure of evil empires from the Third Reich of Nazi Germany to the murderous rule of Soviet Russia under Josef Stalin:
Confiscation of civilian firearms so that people could not revolt against oppressive regimes.
Government control of communications media. Nazi and Russian propaganda swayed and controlled the minds of the populace.
Religion was outlawed and dictators were admired. Religion brings people together, capable of resisting oppressive government.
Unions were outlawed for much the same reason.
Taxes were increased to the point of being monumental. Socialist government would provide for the people.

This is the essence of the Democratic Party:
Gun registration and confiscation.
It owns the news media.
Despite hollow rhetoric, it is not the friend of the working men and women.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are the same in their intentions as listed above.

8. Somewhere deep in my heart, I really, truly, honestly think that House M.D. might be the only show on television brave enough to let its two male leads hook up for real, and I’d almost consider becoming you know, religious again to plead for this only I don’t know if I can ask the Evangelical Jesus I grew up with to help me get canonical gay doctors. Following in [livejournal.com profile] spikesleman's footsteps and posting a bit of news.

Military inadvertently recruits gays

The Army, Navy and Air Force unwittingly advertised for recruits on a website for gays, who are barred from military service if they are open about their sexual orientation.

When informed Tuesday by USA TODAY that they were advertising on GLEE.com, a networking website for gay professionals, recruiters expressed surprise and said they would remove the job listings.

Given the fact that the military wouldn't be in this position with some of its job openings if it hadn't fired the gays in the first place, you'd think they'd want them back. And given that there are many gays who would willingly serve if they could....

And maybe USA Today shouldn't have alerted them. Then maybe the military might realize that (*gasp*) gays really aren't a threat.

So, today is National Coming Out Day. And it was also my chapter's monthly PFLAG meeting. (Go figure.)

I'm coming out as a straight ally.

I'm coming out and saying that while I'm straight, if the right woman comes along, I won't say no.

I'm coming out and saying that I really wish we lived in a world where people didn't have to hide who they are and who they love. (Because, if it's safe, sane, and consensual, who really cares?)

Earlier today, I randomly thought of this quote from a movie I watched a while back, called Straight-Jacket (which I totally recommend to everyone).

This is the only was I can help you, Ray. Because movies, for all their cornball, reactionary idiocy, show us life as it might be, if only we could live up to our ideals. Movie characters are honest, and loyal, and brave. They sacrifice themselves for those they love. They are proud of the qualities that make them individuals. They stand up for what's right, no matter the odds or consequences. Movie characters, in short, would not care who plays them. But I guess there's a reason we pay money to see people like that. In a way I wish I could give you 10 million names today, because then 10 million people could stop hiding and living in fear. And the rest of you would discover wonderful, new sides to people you thought you knew. But I can't do that, Mr. Verrine. Becuase the main trait that separates my kind from yours is that we mean you no harm. When you can say the same about yourself you will have earned the privilege of knowing our names.

Today was another good day. Though, the weather's weirding me out. As much as I like being able to wear shorts, sandals, and a tshirt, it's *really* *really* odd to be doing it on October 7th. Though, thankfully, the nights are finally starting to get cool.

Went to church and Sunday School this morning. In Sunday School, our first "unit" is on the history of Christianity. It's a lot of fun and I like the teacher.

Afterwards, did my normal Panera brunch and read some fic and worked on a fic.

Following that, I went grocery shopping. Stocked up on stuff for lunches this week and got a coupon towards getting a free turkey (which is weird thinking about with the weather so warm). Not sure if we'll need it, but you never know (and finding someone who'll take it shouldn't be hard). And it's sad that when I went through the line about 2:30 that the cashier remarked that I was the first nice customer she'd had.

Well, an upside to the warm weather is that I finally got a chance to wash my comforter this afternoon and instead of trying to fit it in the dryer, I hung it outside on the clothes line.

Finished the first season finale of "Eureka" while eating dinner. After "Purple Haze" and "H.O.U.S.E. Rules", "Once in a Lifetime" was a bit of a downer, but I did like it. My brain's still trying to wrap around a couple things - like, wouldn't sending 2010!Jack back create a paradox in 2006 (as in there being two of them)? Can't wait to see season 2.

Watched Victor Victoria tonight and fell in love with it. Julie Andrews is freakin' amazing. And the movie itself definitely brings up a bunch of interesting questions. So, lots of fun there.

I'm really sleepy and I don't know why. Must be everything catching up to me. I wish we had three day weekends.
sam_gamgee: (puppetnose - georgiamae)
And I knew I should've checked the mail when I got home. My dad found out about the speeding ticket because three different law firms sent me letters in case I needed representation. And he put up a bit of a fuss about me not telling him because I was driving his truck at the time. Well, in a way I can understand that, but other than that I honestly don't see what the fuss was. Aside from the fact that I was speeding, I was driving safely, I don't have to appear in court, and I took care of paying the ticket right away (though I forgot to write down the ticket number or make a copy of it before sending it back). So, in a way, I'm glad he now knows and stuff, but at the same time it's like, "See? This is why I didn't want you to find out." (Honestly, I think if my dad found out my brother got a speeding ticket, there'd have been less of a fuss.)

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] libralyte and I have been having a good time. We went to the beach on Tuesday and had a very nice time, even if it was cloudy. Then Wednesday (yesterday), we went to the Delaware Museum of Natural History, which was lots of fun and which I haven't been to since I was little (or so my dad says, I don't remember going). Last night we watched The Notorious Bettie Page and She's the Man (and Amanda Bynes is probably the cutest thing ever). I had to work today (:-() so she hung out in town. Tonight we watched Totally Awesome.

Clear Channel to sell. Hmmm. Maybe this will mean good things for the Common Rotation guys and the other indie acts out there.

Could this be classified as a step in the right direction?

From [livejournal.com profile] fluterbev's post about the con in England with Garett Maggert:

Ahem. Unfortunately, Garett was under no such restriction.*

"I just want to say this," he said. "My brother," he told us, "has been sending me things."

A collective wave of horror swept through the room.

"I’m just going to get this out out of the way," he said, "and then it’s done, and that’s all I have to say about it."

Cue collective holding of breath, tinged with total terror!

Then the bombshell:

"I don’t want to bottom any more!"

...

...

Okay, dear reader, see what you are doing now? That’s what we did! Squeal, turn totally red, laugh, howl. What else could we do? Especially as he then added, "It’s the big brawny ones who always bottom!"

Have come across some links tonight, and thought I'd share.

Darren Hayes (of Savage Garden) marries boyfriend
Aside from the fact that he sounds quite happy (and that I'm a hopeless romantic), I love this one thing that he said - "I still maintain the belief that families and relationships are not commodities to be sold off for public consumption. In this regard, I am and will continue to be a public person with a private life." And the funny thing is, I was randomly thinking about this today while flipping through a magazine - most of the celebs I actually like and follow have a professional life and a personal life and the two stay separate. (Well, as much as humanly possible.)

There's going to be a Stargate 2!

And, finally, some good old-fashioned pimping. This site has some *amazing* SG-1 artwork on it. There's other fandoms on there as well.

Does anyone have a link for Marimou's SGA vids? I had one, but it appears to be dead.

And, speaking of links, here's a few I've come across, that hopefully someone will find interesting.

Brokeback to the Future - Okay, I'm sure practically everybody's seen this at this point, but I still think it's amazing and pretty darn cool.

Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Ex-Gay Cowboys - an article in today's NY Times Editorial section about Brokeback Mountain and End of the Spear. There's a bunch of really good stuff in it. And I've been mildly excited to see End of the Spear since I first heard about the story a few years back, and then read an interview with the lead, Chad Allen, in an issue of "The Advocate" a couple months back.

Things have been good, if a little quiet here in my little corner of the world. Work's starting to get crazy with the end of the semester and a lot of people doing Christmas shopping. Plus, I'm still looking for a new job.

I've also been diligently working on revising the sequel to "Galileo" that I wrote before NaNo so that I can hand it over to my lovely and *very* talented beta to mock, ridicule, and make better (or something like that).

And since the holiday season is upon us (as well as the new "Queer Eye" season), I thought I'd share this tip from Ted Allen to help with any questions for silverware.

"Flatware know-how: The small fork is for salad. The small knife is for butter. The spoon above your plate at twelve o'clock is for dessert. And the funny-looking knife is for fish. If someone corrects you, the appropriate response is to examine your salad fork, and then discreetly stab the person in the thigh."

***

I found this in "Time" magazine from a few weeks ago and it made me laugh.

He's Not Saving Himself For Owen? by Rebecca Winters Keegan

In the season of Tom and Katie's pregnancy and Ashton and Demi's vows, only true A-listers can stir a fuss by sharing the paper and a peck. Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, who made The Break Up together this summer, have denied they're an item, but their public snuggling, lunch with Vaughn's parents and trip to Target confirmed either a romance or a shared sense of thrift. Aniston recently split from Brad Pitt, who may or may not be dating his former co-star, Angelina Jolie. Vaughn and Pitt were co-stars too. No word yet on whether they will not be dating next.

(Okay, I'll admit that I went in on Friday just out of curiosity, and I had gained two pounds, so am very happy that between Friday morning and my normal time of Tuesdays at 5:30, I've lost most of that weight.)

Have settled back into my normal routine okay. Got most of my pictures back (they can't seem to find one of my rolls) and some of them came out really well and some - not so well. But I'll be putting some up soon.

I've started really working through all the fic I've been wanting to read. I've also started working on my next fic. (Yay!)

And I think I've spent too much time around Adam Busch, as well as the rest of you lot because I wanted to make some sort of political/social comment about this next thing, but I decided I'm just going to post it and let it speak for itself.

The L.A. trip report is forthcoming, I just wanted to share these two things first.

1. When my dad and I were discussing what was going on this week, I reminded him that the dogs have a vet appointment on Thursday. And he responded with, "Okay. And when you go, tell them that Patch has a soft lump on her belly just to the right of center and that it moves around a bit and it seems to be getting bigger." Obviously, this worries me since even though Patch is technically a family dog, she's really my dog. The upside is that it doesn't seem to hurt her when either my dad or I touch her there.

2. This afternoon I was watching Straight-Jacket, which is a take on the 1950s Rock Hudon/Doris Day movies, but it's about a gay actor in the 50s who's found out, so he has to get married (his wife doesn't know that he's gay), and then he falls in love, and it's set against a McCarthy-esque witchhunt. And while it's quite over the top, as only 50s movies can be, it was a lot of fun if you enjoy those types of movies. And there was this quote at the end that I really liked:

After being asked if he was a homosexual communist and answering in the affirmative (even though I doubt he's really a communist), Guy replies,
This is the only was I can help you, Ray. Because movies, for all their cornball, reactionary idiocy, show us life as it might be, if only we could live up to our ideals. Movie characters are honest, and loyal, and brave. They sacrifice themselves for those they love. They are proud of the qualities that make them individuals. Before I forget *yet* *again*, I think you should all rent The 24th Day. I had rented it a while back and it's just phenomenal. I've also recently seen Priest and Wilby Wonderful - both of which are also very high on my recommendation list (though, the first two aren't very light or fluffy).

I'm rather happy with myself - I've been doing quite good with being disciplined and writing every day. I'm not sure how long it'll last, but so far so good.

Today was my dad's 50th birthday. When he and my grandparents got home from their week and three-quarters road trip this evening, we had a barbeque with our neighbors and my brother got some crabs.

I went and saw Batman Begins again today. (Yes, this was the fourth time.) And each time I keep thinking that I'm going to make some coherent post about it, but so far, it ain't happening. All I can say is that I completely love the whole thing - from beginning to end. And I think it's interesting that Rachel isn't his love interest and is basically disqualified from that position - cut for spoiler ) and I'm okay with that. Actually, I think I even prefer it this way. (Not that I have anything against comic book love interests, but....) And I like the quote she has near the end - something like, "No, Bruce, this is your mask. Your real face is the one that criminals now fear." And Hans Zimmer (Batman Begins, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, among many others) just kicks ass. I love his scores. Along with John Williams and the sound crew from the LotR movies, he's one of the reasons why I want to do sound stuff.

And I did enjoy seeing the War of the Worlds trailer again after having seen the movie on Wednesday. (Definitely recommend it - the visuals are stunning and, even though I'm not familiar with the story, I thought it was well done, plot-wise.) Still no Serenity trailer. Well, at least I got to see it once. And, I have to say, I do like the first few seconds of the Dukes of Hazard trailer - where they're in the car with the music. And, is it just me, or does the last frame look like it was ripped from the TFATF title credits? And, dude, considering how many times I've seen the Stealth trailer, that movie better be good.

And now for some quotage:
I'm sure you writers will appreciate this one - "Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen." - John Steinback

Gabrielle Union doing a free association in "People" - (about Elton John and David Furnish getting married) "He's making an honest man out of him."

I kinda figured this. And I'm being good this week, or at least attempting to. (Stop laughing.)

This is one of those posts where I've been meaning to do it all week and then kept getting sidetracked by other shiny things - like writing (which I've actually been doing quite a good deal of).

Anyway...

Last Sunday I went "up home" (aka Tamaqua and Pottsville, PA) with my dad and grandparents so we could visit some family and put flowers on some of the family's graves. I had never actually done this before (the flowers on the graves part), so it was a cool experience. A few of the people I actually knew - like my Mamam Hartwig (my great-grandmother), and Uncle Bob and Aunt Margie (my granddad's brother and sister-in-law). Then, when we were wandering around another cemetary looking for my grandfather's maternal grandmother's grave and we found it as well as his uncle's, aunt's, and cousins' (these were a couple plots with one headstone). And I had to laugh when my grammy called my granddad's Uncle Phil "sissified". And she was like, "You do know what that means, right?" And I was still slightly giggling when I said that I did. So, all in all, it was a good day.

I am very happy this week is over. Since it was finals week, things were rather crazy with book buyback and everyone getting ready to leave and/or graduate. But at least I couldn't say that I didn't have anything to do. And we had a booksigning with Jeff Shaara yesterday, since he was our commencement speaker this year. But some of the upsides were seeing this Aussie that looks like Mark Lutz with curly hair and getting to talk to him for a bit, as well as having a good conversation with a Scotsman who was over visiting family. Also, seeing a guy's shirt that said, "Don't let your mind wander - it's too little to be outside by itself."

This morning my dad and I got up early and walked down Main St (along the way getting a bagel to split and coffee - him, and iced Earl Gray tea - me) and then back up Cleveland Ave to see the banners that the graduating seniors had put out - a number of which were quite funny. I was very proud of myself and I know my dad was too because I did it quite easily (and when he suggested taking a break, I agreed - not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, just in case). This is pretty big because two years ago when I graduated "the first time", I couldn't walk from the stadium back to my dorm, which is *at most* a 1/2 mile and this morning's walk had to be around 4. Yes, 4 miles. So, yay! there.

I feel like I had more I wanted to say, but I can't remember now, so I'll just leave you all with this quote from Andrew Sullivan's column from the May issue of "The Advocate" that I really like and agree with and wanted to share.
[Benedict XVI] doesn't have logic or reality on his side. We have truth on ours. In opposing him we shouldn't demonize or slander him. That only hurts us. We should simply argue fearlessly with the compassion and confidence that comes with knowing that, in the end, the truth will win: that gay people are made in the image of God; that our quest for fidelity is as Christian as any heterosexual's. That's my faith. And that's the core of the church we must try to save.

Had a good weekend, which went by too quickly. Finally ordered my "Firefly" DVDs, so they should be here in a few days.

I've also been very actively watching "Sentinel" and enjoying it very much. And, you know, after watching the first two seasons and the third season opener ("Warriors"), I have to admit that Jim and Blair probably have one of, if not *the*, healthiest couple-ish relationship(s) on TV. And here's some thoughts to back up that statement. )

At least I'm going in the right direction again.

Is it next Thursday yet? I can't wait for [livejournal.com profile] connexions!

I saw a car the other day that had a bumper sticker for Bush from 2000 crossed out with a black marker and another bumper sticker with 'Anyone but Bush' on it. Had to laugh, since apparently, they do exist!

I've been writing pretty consistenly lately. Go me!

Came across this fic search on one of my lists tonight - "I'm searching for a fic where Xander is pregnant with Spike, no one knows except Faith, Wesley gets Xander to LA, Xander lays an egg and it has Spike's baby in it or a mini Spike, sound familiar?" And, you know, this is why I steer clear of mpregs. At least mine was feasible and made sense!

So I found out that Josh Holloway (Sawyer) was on the "Angel" episode "City of...", so I popped it in to watch and he's the lead vamp in the beginning. And, when Angel does the slow-mo getting up and leaving to follow the vamps, there's this huge rainbow flag over his left shoulder. It's kind of hard to miss because it's *right* *there*. I wonder who thought of putting that there and I'm really amused that they did.

Just watched Hugh Laurie on "The Tonight Show" and he's so adorable and funny.

Just finished reading two wonderful essays written by [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen back in 2003 and wanted to rec them. (And, no, I'm really not *that* far behind in my fanfic and fannish-related reading, they just came to my attention tonight.)

Willow and Tara and gay stereotypes

Wesley, AtS and gay stereotypes

So go, read, and enjoy.

WTF? That's all I have to say - WTF?

Today was just one of those days that was insanely busy, plus stressful - but stressful in a lot of little stressful things sort of way. So am very glad it's over. Here's hoping tomorrow's better.

But I now have a new love in my life. It's called "Blind Justice" and it's on ABC on Tuesdays at 10. (And, no, I'm not cheating on "Queer Eye".) It was even better than I had hoped for from seeing the previews and I've fallen completely in love. Possibly (gasp!) even more than "Lost" (but that remains to be seen, no pun intended). I can't wait for next week.

Am highly amused. My Uncle Byron and Aunt Monica gave us a subscription to "Time" for Christmas and the new issue came today and when I got home after Bible Study tonight, it was on the kitchen table next to my stuff and open to the article called "Queer Eye for Straight TV" and, from what I can tell since I haven't read it yet, it's about the gay influence in television this season. Looks like it'll be pretty cool. The only person that would've done that would be my dad, since I haven't seen my brother yet today and, besides, Chase doesn't know I watch "Queer Eye" or have a sneaking suspicion that I'm a lesbian (as far as I know at any rate, though I think my dad's over the second one).

And here's my quick Author Apprecation, since there's no way I'd remember to do it every day this week.

[livejournal.com profile] serafina20 - You all *knew* this one was coming, didn't you? There's "Corner of the World", obviously. But the rest of her stuff is great too. I can't sing her praises highly enough.
[livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen - I love "Protocol" and the "Epiphany" series. And I think she's a great writer. (As does, I think, everyone else in fandom.)
[livejournal.com profile] mpoetess - Skelping. Enough said.
[livejournal.com profile] wesleysgirl - I love her Wesley.
The whole T&B crew - I never would've thought that it could work, but it does and *damn* is it good.

And a special shout-out to [livejournal.com profile] lunanne for being my enabler.

I'm rereading my first fic and switching between rolling my eyes and thinking "It's *hoorrible*!" (a la Ted) and laughing at it and being amazed at how much I've matured as a writer since 1996. I just might post it somewhere so you all can gawk and laugh at it along with me.
