May. 19th, 2013 11:04 pmI went up to King of Prussia yesterday and met up with Sydni, Creatch, and Deb to see Star Trek: Into Darkness at the IMAX. It was the 3D version and one of the few times when it was done really well - partly for the depth perspective on the screen as for the few times they decided to "pop" something out at the audience. And the audience was pretty awesome too.
I'll admit upfront that my knowledge of Star Trek consists of the 2009 movie, a random handful of episodes from the various series and general fannish knowledge. So I can't complain or applaud JJ Abrams, et al, for what they did or didn't do with this movie in regards to the rest of the canon. But as someone coming into the movie knowing that there is this vast legacy from stemming from what Gene Roddenbury started, I do appreciate everyone involved trying to make it accessible for those of us who do have a bit of knowledge, but not much while trying to stay true to the original.
Another advantage to the IMAX theatre - the sound system. It was awesome to hear Michael Giacchino's score through it. And Benedict Cumberbatch's voice. I will admit to being that shallow that I wanted to hear his voice through that sound system. And - mrowr.
I loved Kirk finding out Spock and Uhura were fighting and his response of "What is that even like?"
Obviously getting Scotty off the Enterprise was a ploy to "have someone on the outside/ground", which I tend to be okay with, even if it can be overdone. Plus, it gave Chekov more to do. Though, when Kirk told him to "out on a red shirt and get down to Engineering", there was a loud gasp from the audience.
And when Khan revealed his true identity, there was another gasp, in a good way, from the audience. And I liked how they did it.
I have a feeling that for once people were happy to have a Tribble around.
I didn't really like the ending, after the funeral - it felt like too much of a rehash of the end of the 2009 movie.
I'm sure I'll have more comments after I see it again.
While we were waiting to see if there was an after credits scene, we ended up talking with some people who'd been sitting next to us and they invited us to a fannish meet-up at a nearby pub. It was fun getting to meet some other fen.
And I, in an effort to branch out from drinking the same-old, same-old (usually a vodka drink or straight soda), ordered a double Maker's Mark (bourbon whiskey). Usually, I'm good with one drink, but I ended up getting two, since the bar didn't throw away the ticket and made a second one and the waiter was like, "the bar messed up, so you have an extra drink" and gave it to me for free. And there's no way I'm wasting good, expensive whiskey. But that stuff packs a punch. I was careful, though, and also had a few sodas too, and some food, so that helped with when it came time to drive home.
And
eternalmusings told me later she could tell I was a bit tipsy when I texted her. Which I found amusing that she knows me well enough to know that because the text was, "That's awesome. I'm at bar with friends after seeing Star Trek (OMG awesome!) and had some Maker's Mark and wow, Alaric has a better constitution than I do because wow." I'm doubting that my second text to her that the IMAX was worth it, especially for Benedict's voice could've tipped her off much, since I'm almost positive I'd made comments previously that I was looking forward to seeing the movie in IMAX partially for that reason.
All in all, it was a great day and I've hopefully made some new friends out of it.
