May. 17th, 2013 11:59 pmSo far, the critics seem to be pretty "meh" about Star Trek: Into Darkness (though the fans seem to be mostly positive about it). One thing I love is how regardless of what they think of the movie, everyone seems to have glowing reviews for Benedict Cumberbatch. (Which is as it should be, IMO.)
Except for Martin Freeman. :-D
And from the center of the "Entertianment Weekly" bulls-eye - "Who's the movie villian of the summer? Elementary, my dear Cumberbatch."
It is easy to see why Cumberbatch has developed a dedicated following from his work as the title character on the British series "Sherlock." He's a walking spectacle. If I was an actor with an ego, I would not want to share screen time with this man. Unless you're there to be comic relief, Cumberbatch is going to make you look like a dinner theater actor. - Yahoo! review
Except for Martin Freeman. :-D
He's played by rising British star Benedict Cumberbatch in a totally original way, with the physicality of a dancer and an eager, puckish sincerity that ingeniously disguises his vengeful mission. - "Entertainment Weekly" review

But I see their point. I'm just not sure how they see the character. Given the source material... are we upset because they didn't cast a Spanish man or an Asian man? Or are we just going along with the PC butthurt brigade? Just throwing that in.
My unpopular opinion
Date: 2013-05-19 12:50 am (UTC)That said, I wasn't that impressed with the script itself. The mystery story was okay, but the plot was kind of meh. The only memorable parts seemed to be taken almost word for word from the original (I can't stop thinking of this as a remake now)--the emotional impact I felt was more because I remembered the original and what it made me feel, as opposed to what this story was doing on its own.
Throughout much of the movie, it just didn't feel like Star Trek, if that makes any sense. But, on its own, it was a good movie.
I'll go ahead and classify this one as crack!fic, albeit decent crack!fic.

Date: 2013-05-20 03:07 am (UTC)I loved seeing Benedict and I'm glad to see him get the recognition he deserves. Everyone acted the shit out of their characters, once again proving that they were cast perfectly for their roles.
I totally agree with this. Everyone was awesome.
And I get what you're saying. And with something that's been going on this long, there's bound to be at least a little bit of crack!fic at one point or another. At least we were able to get some pretty decent stuff. :-P
