I'm beginning to wonder what sort of magic is used by romance novel writers. The stories are *so* formulatic, and yet they're pretty fun to read and do such a great business. There's got to be more to it than wish-fulfillment and escapism because you *know* that it's going to be a happy ending, so that takes away the tension of will-they-won't-they and the inevitable conclusion and pay-off.

This muing brought to you by the third book in a Mary Balogh Regency series. :-P

I think they're like comfort food. You know what to expect, so you don't have to think too hard, but the journey and the people you meet along the way all have different flavors, so it doesn't get boring.

That's true. And on the upside - no calories. :-P

I don't do romances, but I read a lot of mysteries. Also kinda formula-type books. You pretty much know the detective will solve the murder (or whatever kind of case it is -- usually a murder or murders). The fun is in watching how it's done and trying to get there before the detective. :)

Very true. It is a good way to examine the journey and see how the author does it. :-)
