I'm only allowed to buy yarn after I've used up enough yarn that I have room for more stash. :o) It's been about a year, now - though my mother keeps sending me yarn as a present, or yarn gift certificates, so I've replenished for free a few times. Woe.
I find that I do best with 3-4 projects, so I can have a range of 'big needles, easy project for complicated tv watching' and 'tiny needles, using charts, must focus' and one or two in between. MOre than that and I forget what I've got to work on, and fewer than that and I end up with nothing to knit while watching tv so I have to pause the tv until I find something. ;-) (If I watch tv without my hands being busy, I keep getting up and finding a snack or checking the internet or wandering around. So knitting helps me focus - it's medicinal knitting!)
The main reason for my proviso is that I currently don't have room for a stash. And yet I seem to be building one, even if it falls within my proviso. Go figure. :-P
I tend to do best with one project at a time, because otherwise it feels like it takes forever to finish anything and I get frustrated with that, so I'd rather focus on one and get it done. But, yes, I love knitting while tv watching too - partly so I don't snack too, and because then I feel productive while I'm catching up on shows. :-) I agree with the medicinal knitting! And it keeps me from hurting other people. ;-)
I have been crocheting a black scarf for my oldest son to give him for Christmas. But I did not get to see him till last weekend. I asked him if he wears scarfs and he got that 'caught' look that men get when women ask them too much. The then sheepishly said no. Will I told him that if we ever have a real winter again, he will have a scarf and a hat and gloves that I also got him. It was fun to make and I am sure someone in his immediate family will wear the scarf.

So far it's worked.
