Jun. 17th, 2008 11:59 pmMy body's being weird! But in a really good way for once. My appetite's been way down (otherwise I feel fine). Last week when it was really, really hot, I could understand because who wants to eat when there's an excessive heat warning in effect?
But it's still going. Which - don't get me wrong - I'm all for, all things considered. Hopefully this will help me lay the groundwork for better eating habits and all that.

And all you
tribalforces people who were pimping "Torchwood" over the weekend (and whoever it was that showed "Captain Jack Harkness") - I hate you, but in the most loving way possible. After watching all of season one, the season one declassifieds, and the outtakes (this one three times), I think I'm in love.
I love Jack, even if he's brash and impetuous and not the greatest leader. Even so, something about him makes me trust him, even while I'm yelling at him for what he's doing or saying.
I love Owen too. Not quite sure why, there's just something about him.
Toshiko and Ianto are fun. I can't wait to see more of them.
Gwen's the only one who I don't really care for. At least not on her own. I like her in relation to other people. For instance, I like her and Owen a lot. I also like seeing her and Jack together (but not in a 'shipper sort of way) - I think this is in part because I see her being his humanity.
"Captain Jack Harkness" was an amazing episode and I'm glad I finally got to see it in its entirety. And "End of Days" was really good too. I quite enjoyed the last fifteen minutes or so of it (even if I thought Abydon was really amusing and couldn't help but think, "When did this become a monster movie?").

Date: 2008-06-18 11:34 am (UTC)Gwen gets mixed reactions across fandom - one of those love/hate characters. She's intended to be the hear of the show but sometimes her level of fierce emo over it make her a little on the Mary-suish.
Jack on the other hand is made of awesome!!!! - Interestingly though, there are a bunch of fans not quite in his corner, but they find other aspects of the show they like. Most people can't stand Owen, but because of the scene in the first episode where he's using the alien device to get laid - the equivilent of date rape - there's some serious fandom hatred, compounded by the fact that Rusty thought date rape was overblown.
It's actually an interesting situation. I can agree that it is in fact date rape, but the idea that there's something to "make the princess fall in love" is so old and standard to fairy tales and science fiction and it's never been made a big deal of, it's hard to recontextualize it. In other words, I can look past the incident and treat it as further evidence that Owen is an *ass*. I kind of like Owen too - wouldn't date him, but love him as a character because he's such an ass.
Ianto and Tosh are made of love - they both need more screen time
Then there are other thing - uhmmm which I think are in S1 but I'm not sure, so I'll refrain -- You need to catch up on S2. If you're having trouble with that, drop me an e-mail ;-)

Date: 2008-06-20 02:14 am (UTC)I agree that Jack is made of awesome. I can understand why people wouldn't be in his corner - like I said, he's brash, impetuous, and he sucks at being a leader at least some of the times. And he does the "do as I say, not as I do," thing a lot too. But he is quite a charmer, among other things. :-P
Weirdly, I didn't initially think of that scene as date rape, but now that you mention it, I see what you mean. And I think it's because, as you said, it's so old and standard to the genre that you don't think about it too much. And, yeah, Owen is an ass. But I think Burn and the writers have done a good job of making him a sympathetic ass.
I have to admit, I love Ianto calling Jack 'sir' so much. I think it's cute and amusing.
I'm good on season 2 and just started it tonight, so it shouldn't be too long before I'm caught up. Doctor Who on the other hand.... That's a different story. :-P
