So, here's the first on my "plotbunny release program" list. It was going to be a "Dead Like Me" George/Rube story set some time after the show ended. Let's just say it didn't get very far.

If anyone had told George that she would be the one to stick it out with Rube, she would have laughed at them. But that’s exactly what happened. Surprisingly, Mason had been the first to go. The night before his last reap he and George went out and got shit-faced and the next morning when he got his Post-It, he silently took it and nodded. Daisy had been next. The night before she went, she and George stayed in and watched old movies on TMC and ate Ben and Jerry’s. When she got her Post-It, she got teary.

Roxy had stayed around for a while after that. George had suspected it was to make sure that George and Rube would look after each other and that the new Reapers would be okay. Roxy’s last night George had been alone – Rube took her out. When she got her Post-It, she nodded and put it away, like always. But before they left, she did the unexpected and gave George a hug – and made her promise to take care of Rube.

After that, time just kind of went on. George matured. Reapers came and went. Delores groomed George to be her replacement before retiring. They stayed friends after that and usually met for lunch on Fridays. Rube also started grooming George to be his replacement. When asked why, since it wasn’t like they knew for sure that she wouldn’t go before him, he just said he had a feeling.

They started a routine. George would go over to Rube’s in the evening and they’d prepare dinner together before settling into their respective places in the living room to read. It had started with George wanting to get away from the other Reapers – who were living with her in the house Madison had procured that she and Daisy had been living in.

George had originally balked at the idea of reading, but she had need to get away from the other Reapers – whose immaturity was starting to grate and she had realized that this must have been what it was like for Rube and the others when she had first come on. And Rube was the only one she felt really comfortable with. Sure, she had a smattering of friends – mostly from work – but she had learned to keep a low profile with being in the Death business. And since Rube didn’t have a TV, but a *lot* of books…one thing led to another.

And then one thing led to another as they began reading passages to each other. Then they started reading chapters. Then full books. And somewhere along the way, George started curling up against Rube with one his arms around her shoulders.

One night, after they had finished their allotted reading, both seemed reluctant to move.

When George turned to say something to Rube, she found him looking at her with an unreadable expression. What she was going to say died in her mouth as she asked, “What?”

He just shook his head slightly and silently. After another moment of looking, he slowly leaned in and kissed her gently. George yielded easily and opened her mouth to let his questing tongue in.

She had had a few one night stands since becoming a Reaper, and even had had a boyfriend for a couple months a few years in, but none of them had felt like this – so comfortable and complete and *sure*.

Very nicely done! I adored the show and have missed seeing it, this was a delightful little slice of what could have been. Thank you!
