I've decided that in my effort to eat better, lose weight, etc., I need to finish what I started months ago and really go through the kitchen and use up what we have and start getting fresh blood in (so to speak) in the way of food.

As it stands now, I'm hesitant to cook because I want to use up what we have first, but I don't know what we have. And I don't think my dad knows what we have - which is why he almost always make the same stuff. (Plus, he has a tendency to buy stuff because he figures we can use it "at some point", and then we never do because it's not something we use on a regular basis - hence the absurd number of cans of peas, when we don't use canned peas to begin with.)

And I figure that if I clean things out and know exactly what we have, then I'll be more inclined to buy things on a regular basis to cook and eat better.

If you're finding lots of canned goods that you just never seem to eat and they don't seem appealing, I'd keep one or two with specific plans to include them in meals, then give the rest to a food pantry or something. I think it's good to "force" yourself to eat things that are healthy but not your favorites (like, veggies in general) but not good to make yourself eat a lot of stuff you genuinely dislike. :-)

I'm with WG on sorting through the pantry. Give yourself a fresh start and ignore the pantry items you don't want to use and buy the ones that suit your recipe.

Of course, you'll also have to talk to your dad about it if he buys things that neither of you use.

That was my thought too last night when I was looking over the list I'd made a while back. And I really do like peas, it's just easier with it being just me and my dad to have frozen peas so we can take what we need and not have to deal with a 15 oz (or whatever it is) can of them. But I'm looking at it as a positive, since it's making me go, "So, what can I do with this?" and I'm finding new recipies and dishes and the like. :-) (Because, really, my dad - and my mom when she was still with us - had, like, three or four things that they would just rotate between.)

And I agree too. :-) And as I told her, I'm also looking at it as a positive, since it's making me go, "So, what can I do with this?" and I'm finding new recipies and dishes and the like, since my parents have, like, three or four things that they just rotate between. When I asked my dad about the peas, he was like, "I thought we could make vegetable soup with them." which made me laugh, because no one in my house has made vegetable soup in my house since my brother and I were little. :-P (Hmmm... peas, chicken broth, crockpot, might have to set up a meeting. :-P)
