Today was a good, long day. My dad and I left this morning about 8:30 to go to the beach. And we were reminded why we don't usually go on a Saturday - traffic. Even the "back way" was backed up. On the upside, I did get a nice nap out of it.

Since we did a bit of ping-pong beachwise - here's the order of beaches (and beach towns) from north to south - Rehoboth, Dewey, Indian River Inlet, and Bethany.

When we got down to the beach, it was sprinkling a little bit, so we went into Bethany, since my dad wanted to see how the beach replentishment program went. (They widened the beach, made the dunes bigger and planted dune grass. Aside from some of the people who had first floor beach front property who were pissed at not being able to see the ocean now, it's not a big deal.)

It continued spritzing as we came back north, so we stopped in Dewey for lunch at Grotto Pizza. (We usually have dinner here, but we figured that with it raining, we might as well do it now and then go from there.) By the time we finished our pizza and antipasto, things had cleared up outside and the sun was out.

So we went back south to the Indian River Inlet to go out on the beach. We had a really nice afternoon on the beach. The water was a little cold, but not bad. And the rain seemed to have scared a lot of people off, so it wasn't crowded. I was going to both read and write while sitting on the beach. I started and finished a book on ghost stories from the Civil War. I got no writing done (but I did brainstorm a little). We ended up having the sandwiches we made for lunch for dinner.

We left the beach around six to get cleaned up and went into Rehoboth onto the boardwalk for a bit. We went to the Royal Treat - which has great ice cream. From there, we went up Rehoboth Avenue (which is the main drag coming off the boardwalk) so my dad could get a print of a picture he saw when he was down last week. After that, we played two games of air hockey (my dad won both) before coming home.

When we got home, my brother and his girlfriend were over and cooking jambalaya. It was good. The one thing I didn't like about it, though, is that being jambalaya, it had shrimp in it and my brother also put in red snapper and clams. I don't eat seafood. My brother can't grasp the concept that I've tried various sorts of seafood and don't like it. I've always been this way, just as my dad and brother have always liked seafood. (This is an instance where I wish I had a food allergy, but I don't.) So my brother and my dad made me try all of the seafood and wouldn't let me out of it. The snapper didn't really taste like anything. The clam was chewy, but didn't really taste fishy, but I think that was because of everything else with it. The shrimp still tasted like shrimp. (That may have partly been because the shrimp hadn't been shelled prior to cooking.) Grr.

And, otherwise, my dad was good today. He did try to have a discussion about my job situation on the way down and I told him I was looking and that I didn't want to talk about it. Then when we were at the Inlet and putting on sunscreen, he made a comment about getting rid of the fat on my arms.

I am glad we got a beach day in. I've always loved going to the beach and it's always been a rejuvinating experience for me.
