This hit me tonight while I was talking with e_dog over dinner.

So, we know the SGA season 1 Team Sheppard was comprised of Sheppard, Teyla, Ford, and McKay.

Here's the thought - what was Elizabeth thinking? Was that really a good idea to let them all be on the same team?

Here's my reasoning:

Maj John Sheppard: The acting leader of the military contingent on Atlantis.

Lt Aiden Ford: Sheppard's second-in-command.

Dr. Rodney McKay: The head of the Science division and Elizabeth's second-in-command.

Teyla Emmagan: The leader of the Athosians and Atlantis' ambassador to the other peoples in the Pegasus Galaxy.

Does anyone else find it a little screwy that this many important people are on the same team, with life threatening danger all around them?

Kinda, but it's been a staple of SF shows since Star Trek - I mean the captain, 2nd officer, and the head doctor went on how many away team missions together?

If I remember correctly Next Gen even made a point about it early on about why Captain Picard wouldn't go on missions. But the example and precedent for a SF show was already out there.

It does seem somewhat odd, but it is science FICTION.

I was going to use the Star Trek example too. *g* Of course, they always brought along plenty of red shirts so they knew they would be safe.

And look at the first SGA mission - Sumner, Ford and Sheppard were all on it! (Was Bates?) She's lucky only Sumner didn't make it back.

I still think it's odd, in a very amusing way. The Star Trek examples do quell my curiosity on the subject just a tad though.

I also thought about it a bit more and though, if I were Elizabeth, I would probably put my best people together regardless. There's such a high success rate there and naturally, they all have amazing luck and good fortune surrounding them.

Well, I never watched Star Trek, so that's kind of lost on me. But it's good to know other shows have done it too.

Yeah, Bates was with them when they went to meet the Athosians for the first time. But Bates was a Sergeant, so would he have been third in command?

(I know he was there because I happened to watch "The Rising" recently.)

It's true that putting the best together is a good idea in general, but I don't know if in that situation, with being cut-off from Earth and all, is the best idea. But, true about the good luck and all.

And I found that book that I was telling you about with the Chinese food. Not sure, but he did become head of Atlantis security. It kind of looked like all the marines went with them. Had they all been culled, Atlantis would have been pretty vulnerable. Ah, hindsight.

I love Rising! (Only on DVD where you can still get the unedited version though) It remains one of my favorites.
