This comes under the heading of "OMG, you *cannot* be serious." (If it doesn't, it should.)

I was over at my mom and John's tonight for my weekly visit. Since I had forgotten to grab the next Band of Brothers disc, we just watched some TV - not a big deal. We watched "Two and a Half Men", "Jeopardy!" and Discovery Channel's "How It's Made" (which is pretty neat - I've never seen it before).

During the last bit of "How It's Made", my maternal grandmother called and my mom and I talked to her. Through the course of the conversation, the show finished and the next show - "Mythbusters" came on. I really like "Mythbusters", but don't usually get a chance to watch it because I'm either at my mom's or on my way home from my mom's at that time, so it's kind of a moot point.

My mom ended the conversation and says, "Can I change the channel? I don't like that show. They're gay."
I replied, "Sure, I'm gonna go, anyway," as she starts flipping through the channels and I put my shoes back on. "They're not gay, Mom."
"Yes, they are."
"I doubt that has any bearing on the show. It's a really cool show and it's got a lot of good stuff in it."
"Well, they're smart gay. That's disgusting."
"*How* is that disgusting, Mom? And them being gay has nothing to do with how smart they are."
"They're nerdy gay." (She says with disdain.)
"Being nerdy's not that bad."
"They're nerdy gay and that's wrong. The Fab Five weren't nerdy gay. I liked them."
"Mom, the Fab Five were still really smart guys."
"Maybe so, but these guys are geeky."
"Geeky's not bad either. I'm a geek about certain things."
"John's a geek sometimes."
"See - being a geek's not a bad thing. You're just invalidating your argument."


I guess it's good to know the insanity does come from both sides of the family. *Rolls eyes and shakes head*

Nerdy gay?!

I'm really curious how being a gay geek is so much more disgusting than, say, being FLAMING gay, like the Fab Five. *snerk*

Truthfully, when watching Mythbusters, who they're sexually attracted to is the furthest thing from my mind. Mundanes are weird!

Um...ok...wow. That almost makes me feel better about my family. Have you considered finding fannish examples of, like, every possible gay stereotype (flaming, butch, nerdy, etc.), and asking her to rate them in terms of "wrong"-ness? could be really amusing. :-)

(Though, really, if you want to feel better about your family? I was talking about something or other the other day, and out of nowhere, my mother announced--to all of Panera Bread--"You know, I think you're heterophobic!" No, really, she did.)

Yeah, if you heard all the stuff about my family, you'd feel great about yours. :-P (Though, this is the worst of it lately.) And I haven't, though I doubt my mom would get it, since she's not a fannish person. But, yeah, I think probing her about Carson (one of the Fab Five, if you're not familiar) could be interesting, considering how much of a flamer he is.

(LOL. That's an interesting comment. I still love my "reading McShep slash in Panera while backing up to a booth full of Marine Reservists" incident.)

If they are or not, I enjoy the show. It's one of the shows Jim gets obsessed with and watches for, y'know, hours when they run marathons.

*shrug* I dunno. They never set off my "gaydar" anyway.

You reminded me of an incident I had with my father several months back, so it's not just your family. Heh.

While my parents have the tendency to make homophobic remarks, they only do so in moderation. Nevertheless, they still do, but not to such a degree as that. They'd just rather not speak of gay/lesbian/bi topics unless forced to or feel their "wisdom" on the topic is necessary for my "upbringing".

As far as Adam and Jamie being gay? That would be the last thing that crossed my mind. Upon first reading this, I got the impression that maybe your mom was using "they're gay" as in "they're stupid" or "they're weird". As I continued to read, I saw she was not. *sigh* Not that using the term "gay" in that fashion is alright, but a great number of our population still use "gay" to describe something they find unpleasant or something like that.

I usually find my dad's behavior on the topic childish and close minded, but I know I can't change him. He would have to make a change on his own. Getting mad with him usually makes things worse.

I just got really long winded here, but the point is, I can totally relate.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I doubt that they're really gay. My mom's making stupid assumptions/incorect statements.

I could easily watch that show. I'm just usually not home. :-)
