nakedwesley that I would look up the meaning behind doughnuts on Fat Tuesday (also called Fasching). Haven't found a meaning yet. Will more than likely call grandparents later and see if they know. But some of the traditions about relationships are interesting.
But in the mean time, I found this article about Fasching doughnuts:
Police raid bakeries after doughnut tip-off
Austrian police have staged a series of raids on bakeries across the country acting on information that their doughnuts do not contain enough jam.
A spokesman confirmed to German press agency DPA that dozens of people now faced court charges after they were caught providing popular "fasching" doughnuts that did not contain enough jam.
In every third doughnut tested by police food inspectors, the jam content was less than the prescribed 15 per cent.
In the product of one manufacturer it was just 10.3 per cent, the spokesman said.
Police said it was a serious matter of fraud, carrying fines or jail sentences of up to three months.
Consumer protection councillor Gabi Burgsthaller said: "About one-third of the doughnuts were against regulations. The jam proportion was under 15%.
"At a production level of several thousand, huge sums are at stake. The manufacturers save cash, and the consumer is cheated."
