It's weird having the most important parts of your Sunday be church and laundry. Usually during school, it's church, laundry, papers, reading, etc. But it was kinda nice.
So this all started earlier this month when I was archiving some challenges to the m-mSlashaholics' Wild Plot Bunnies page. One of my friends had put in a challenge for a Wes mpreg story. (mpreg = male pregnancy - yes, you read right) And the bunny decided to come home with me. Now, I don't have anything against the mpreg genre - at least not like I do with RPS and Chan fic - I just don't get it. I don't see why women would want to write it. (I'm sure some men have written it too, but given the statistic that more women than men write slash, I think it's safe to assume that most of the mpreg authors are also women.) I know the reasons run the gamut from "Why not?" to some sort of masochistic revenge.
So, since I was in charge of this new bunny, I decided to read some mpreg stories to see how they handled it. So far I've read 4 stories, 3 of which are WIP (works in progress). Two are Spike/Xander ("Buffy"), one's Xander/Angel ("Buffy"), and one's Clark/Lex ("Smallville"). In the first three, the extent of the pregnancy is "Xander's pregnant!" with a dash of morning sickness and horomones thrown in. The Clex story is better, but still doesn't really go into it - which I'm willing to overlook since the pregnancy itself isn't really the point of the story. And in the "Buffy" stories, everything's very dramatic and there's a good amount of exclamation points (as in practically every sentence). And even in one of the stories, Angelus rapes Xander and when Angel gets put back in control (which is never explained), Xander and the rest of the group accepts Angel with open arms. Riiight. I've tried looking for some other "Buffy" mpregs, and they're basically the same. I do know that there's some good mpreg fic out there (hence the "Smallville" fic and a friend's fic).
So, yeah, I'm planning on writing what seems like will be the anti-"Buffy" mpreg. Which means that it won't have the "Xander's pregnant!" type of mentality and actually make you feel the morning sickness. Or something like that.
And the pimpage - Family, Friendship, and Love by Henry Jones Jr. Also read at least some of her other stuff, since it's really good.
And Mary Ann - this may or may not be out of line, but I managed to snag the front section of Friday's New York Times and had to giggle. Right under the article for the Supreme Court's decision on sodomy laws, etc. was a little blurb on Strom Thurmond's death. My thought was, "he's pro'ly turning in his grave right now."
